A case in point is Lamar Hunt, who was the principal founder of the American Football League (AFL) in 1959. Hunt was a wealthy businessman who loved sports. He initially sought to obtain a National Football League (NFL) team. However, he was unsuccessful with his application for an expansion franchise in the NFL. Next, he and friend Bud Adams tried to purchase the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL, with the desire to relocate them to Dallas, Texas. They were turned down and thus failed in their attempt.
At this point Hunt could have given up to pursue other interests. But this is the difference between ordinary leaders and dynamic leaders. Lamar Hunt thought about it and decided that a new league might be the way to go.
Here's where Hunt sought out like-minded people. You see, Hunt and Adams weren't the only ones who failed in an attempt to obtain a National Football League (NFL) franchise. It turned out that at least six other men had also failed. So after consulting with Bud Adams, Hunt proposed a completely new professional football league.
Eventually Hunt and Adams contacted that group of six men and formed the American Football League (AFL) with teams in various cities. The eight men were referred to as the "Foolish Club." It may have been deemed foolish, but that "other league" survived. Within six years of its formation, the AFL forced a merger deal with the older, established NFL. It was a very successful deal for all involved.
The history of the two leagues (NFL & AFL) and the subsequent merger is quite a fascinating story. But none of it would have been possible without the dynamic leadership of Lamar Hunt. He had the vision, sought out like-minded people and turned the vision into reality.

Dynamic Leaders Aren't Afraid to Delegate Responsibility
